On Monday, the godfather of Warwick Field Hockey, Bob Derr, passed away at the age of 75. Retiring in 2022, Derr had been at the helm of the program for 39 seasons. On Tuesday, Warwick had a chance to make it to the State Championship, a game that Derr won three times during his career. But first, the Warriors would need to defeat a solid Palmyra squad that shocked Mount Saint Joseph Academy on Saturday to reach the State Semifinals at Central Dauphin Middle School.
The game was incredibly intense early. A huge save from Abby Bennett kept the game scoreless through the 1st quarter. Neither team could break through in the 2nd quarter either, and the teams went into halftime gridlocked at 0-0.
Late in the 3rd quarter, Warwick was able to convert on a corner, with Calli Martin giving Warwick a 1-0 lead.
Palmyra looked like they had responded in the 4th quarter with a corner of their own, but the officials waved it off due to a violation (video below). Having faced that setback, the Lady Cougars were unable to find another opportunity to tie the game before time expired.
The loss ended Palmyra’s season, during which they won eighteen games and finished 3rd in District 3 before winning two games in the PIAA State Tournament.
The victory by Warwick offers an opportunity to honor Coach Derr with its fourth State title when they take on Northern York at Cumberland Valley on Saturday afternoon.
