Athlete of the Week

Athlete of the Week Voting: September 30 – October 6

Presented in coordination with Froggy Valley 100.1/WiLBuR 99.7 & Lebanon Federal Credit Union, help us decide which male and female athlete should be honored for their outstanding efforts during last week’s local high school sports action.  While you may have a favorite school or athlete already, we still encourage you to read through the lists below and then click on the link to vote.

The winners will be announced at the end of the week. Linked below are the articles about our most recent winners of the award.

Voting will remain open until Wednesday at 10 pm.

One vote per email address, per day will be allowed.

While athletes can be nominated multiple weeks, the winners will be removed and updates will be provided as the season progresses.

While this may be a vote and emotions can run high, this is intended to bring attention to some of the best performances from our local student-athletes.

Nominations, which are made working with the schools, are listed below in alphabetical order.

Please read about each nominee, celebrate their accomplishment, and then go vote who you feel is most deserving of this week’s honor.

Female Nominees

Nia Hafey (Annville-Cleona / So.) – Tennis: In the #1 Singles AA bracket at the Lancaster Lebanon League Girls Tennis Tournament, Hafey took 5th place. During the season, the sophomore has won 26 matches.

Miracle Hershey (New Covenant / Sr.) – Soccer: In four games last week, all victories, Hershey totaled 3 goals & 5 assists. One of her goals was the go-ahead goal in the 2-1 win over Oley Valley. Playing as a defensive midfielder, Hershey used her speed as one of the fastest girls in the county to cause disruptions on both ends of the field. Her leadership helped propel the Flames to five wins over a seven-day time period as they improved to 13-2 on the season.

Valeria Lopez / Rachel Troup (Northern Lebanon / Sr., Jr.) – Tennis: Pairing together as the #3 Doubles team for the Vikings, the duo finished the season with a record of 7-1. At the Lancaster Lebanon League Tournament, Lopez & Troup won their 1st round match with an 8-1 victory over their counterparts from ELCO.

Chloe Shirk (ELCO / Jr.) – Volleyball: While the Raiders split their matches with Lebanon & Garden Spot, winning one and losing one, Shirk was outstanding. She totaled 21 kills, 15 digs, 2 aces, & 5 blocks. The junior has assumed the role of a leader, helping to guide ELCO throughout the season.

Jovie Weaver (Palmyra / Jr.) – Field Hockey: The junior factored in the scoring of all three games that the Lady Cougars played last week. Weaver scored 2 goals & had 1 assist as Palmyra went 2-1 with wins over Hershey & Red Land, along with a loss on penalty strokes to a tough Manheim Township, last year’s PIAA State Runner-Up (AAA).

Male Nominees

Camron Buchmoyer (Lebanon / Jr.) – Football: In Lebanon’s close 14-8 loss to Elizabethtown, the junior linebacker totaled 17 tackles, 10 of which were solo. He also had 3 tackles for a loss. Buchmoyer’s performance helped the Cedars in limiting E-Town’s offense as the game’s outcome hung in the balance until very late into the 4th quarter.

Owen Fisher (New Covenant / Jr.) – Soccer: In two wins last week, the midfielder totaled 4 goals and 2 assists. Fisher’s play led New Covenant to outscore their opponents 11-3 as they improved to 11-1-1 for the season.

Travis Furmanski (Cedar Crest / Jr.) – Cross Country: At the Paul Short Invitational, Furmanski set a Cedar Crest school record by running a 15:53.7. This placed the junior runner in 28th place out of a total of 1,244 athletes that traversed the course at Lehigh University.

Luke Hentz (Northern Lebanon / Jr.) – Cross Country: Early in the week, Hentz placed 4th in a meet against Annville-Cleona & Octorara, defeating all of the runners from Octorara. In Saturday’s Gettysburg Invitational, the junior ran a 17:08.2 to place 17th out of a field of over 200 runners.

Bryce Hoglund (ELCO / Sr.) – Soccer: Last week, the Raiders went 2-1 with wins over Donegal & Northern Lebanon and a close defeat to Lower Dauphin. In those games, Hoglund had 2 goals & 5 assists. Changing positions due to injuries sustained by his teammates, the senior’s team-first mentality has been helpful to ELCO’s competitiveness this season.

Landon Hostetter (Annville-Cleona / Sr.) – Soccer & Cross Country: In two wins for Annville’s Soccer team last week over Lebanon & Solanco, the senior recorded 1 goal & 2 assists. Additionally, he served as a top runner for the Cross Country as they won their 3rd straight Lancaster Lebanon League Section 3 Championship.

Julian Meley (Palmyra / Jr.) – Soccer: The junior goalkeeper helped lead the Cougars to a 2-0-1 record last week, as they defeated Donegal & Bishop McDevitt while typing Red Land. In those three games, Meley did not allow a goal, earning a trio of shutouts. He has blanked the opposition in four out of Palmyra’s last five games.
