On Saturday, teams from Mid Penn Conference reported to Chambersburg for the annual Conference Championship Meet. Given Palmyra’s recent success, complete with top-end talent, the Cougars were sure to factor into the medal count. When the meet was complete, Palmyra lived up to the hype, having captured a total of sixteen medals. The haul included five goal medal performances.

On the Girls’ side, Palmyra’s top finisher was Sofie Price (Jr.) who entered the weekend as the top-seed in the Javelin. Price lived up the weighty expectations and captured the top spot on the podium with a winning throw of 117’2”.

Abby Berarducci (Sr.) ran a 5:12.1 in the 1600m to finish in 3rd place. Also earning a bronze medal was Maddy Waldron (Fr.), who ran a 12.88 in the 100m before adding a 6th place medal by running a 26.65 in the 200m. Elaina Potter (Jr.) cleared 10’ in the Pole Vault to finish in 5th place.

The Boys’ competition was dominated in several areas by the orange and black, a set of performances that resulted in four gold medals. Tyler Burgess (Jr.) led the charge by winning both the 110m High Hurdles (14.38) and the 300m IM Hurdles (37.60). His winning time in the 300m race set a new Palmyra school record, breaking the elusive mark set by Hollis Pencheff, the 1979 State Champion and former Pennsylvania record holder.

Tyler Burgess was not the only member of his family to claim gold on the day. Twin brother Jacob Burgess (Jr.) won the Long Jump competition with a leap of 22’3”. He also earned an 8th place medal by clocking a 23.35 in the 200m. The two siblings would then by another set of brothers, Jonathan McDannell (Sr.) and Travis McDannell (So.), to take 3rd in the 4x100m relay (42.93).

Mason Bucks (Sr.), last year’s State silver medalist in the Pole Vault, showed on Saturday that he is ready to make another run to the top of the podium. His high flying act allowed him to clear 16’0” to claim Mid Penn gold. Bucks also finished with a 4th place medal in the High Jump by clearing 6’0”.

In a show of their hurdling presence, two more Cougars also followed Tyler Burgess by medaling in the Hurdles. In the 110m High Hurdles, Jonathan McDannell finished 4th (15.25) and Noah Stewart (Jr.) finished 7th (16.37).

On the Distance front, Cornelius Cummings (So.) finished 5th in the 3200m by running a 9:50.7 to set a new personal record. In the 4x800m, Cummings was joined by Jake Vottero (Sr.), Cohen Claar (Jr.), and Ethan Yorty (Jr.) to finish 5th (8:12.6).

The Boys finished 3rd in Team Scoring. The Girls finished the meet finishing 11th among the teams in the Mid Penn.
