Saturday, February 3

Cedar Crest 64, Conrad Weiser 37

Fresh off Thursday’s Section 1 clincher over Manheim Township, the Falcons returned to action on the road against Conrad Weiser on Saturday afternoon. Crest asserted themselves early, hitting from all over the floor. In the 1st quarter, big man RJ Young and IUP Football commit Fernando Marquez each scored 6 points. Marquez went 4-4 from the free throw line in the opening frame. Jackson Custer hit a three-pointer, scoring 5 points. Leading by 10 points going into the 2nd quarter, the Falcons would extend it to a 39-22 advantage by halftime. Young added eight more, giving him 14 points at the break. A balanced attack in the 3rd quarter made it a 27-point Crest lead ahead of the 4th quarter, allowing Coach Smith to get most of his players into the game.

Young finished with 18 points to lead the Falcons. In total, ten Cedar Crest players were able to tally points in the victory. One shooting trend to note is that while Crest only hit one three-pointer but was deadly at the charity stripe, connecting on 11 of 12 attempts.

Cedar Crest (15-5) will finish the regular season on Tuesday when they host McCaskey.

Schuylkill Valley 61, Northern Lebanon 41

Northern Lebanon entered Schuylkill Valley on Saturday to challenge their hosts, looking to wrap up a District 3 Playoff berth. The Vikings knew they would have their hands full with the 12-5 Panthers. However, the game would serve as good experience, especially given the youth movement currently underway at Northern Lebanon.

Schuylkill Valley came out hot, putting up 28 points in the 1st quarter to build a 19-point lead. Northern Lebanon adjusted in the 2nd quarter to hold them to just 8 points. Led by Andrew Via’s 11 points in the 1st half, Northern Lebanon faced a 36-20 deficit heading into the break. In the 3rd quarter, Schuylkill Valley broke through again to extend their lead to 29. Again, Northern Lebanon rebounded for another defensively strong 4th quarter.

In the game, the sophomore Via led the Vikings with 13 points. Riley Messinger scored 9, while leading the offense.

Speaking with Northern Lebanon’s Coach George after the game, he had this to say: “Schuylkill Valley is an experienced playoff team that showed that they are again a really talented and athletic. They did some things we couldn’t adjust to, at least consistently. With that, I am really proud of our effort to stay locked in all game. We got excellent output from Messinger and Via. Krall and Shaffer were big on the boards. Sophomore Ben Planken had another nice night. We are starting to see consistent, quality play from many of the younger JV guys that are getting more minutes at the varsity level.”

Northern Lebanon (6-14) will play their first of their final two games when they travel to Lampter-Strasburg on Tuesday.

Friday, February 2

Annville-Cleona 56, Mount Carmel 53

While Annville-Cleona is known for its hot starts, that was not the case when they hosted Mount Carmel on Friday night. At the end of the 1st quarter, the Dutchmen found themselves looking at a 7-point deficit. In the 2nd quarter, they were able to get the offense going but still trailed 30-25 at the break. In the 1st half, Elisha Slabach scored 12 points, with Jon Shay adding 11.

In the 3rd quarter, Annville continued to score, but they made it difficult for Mount Carmel to do the same. Slabach added another 10 points as the Dutchmen ended the quarter with a 5-point lead. In the 4th, Mount Carmel recovered and made a run, but Annville was able to hit twelve free throws to seal the victory that broke a five-game skid.

Slabach finished the game with 25 points, connecting on three three-pointers. Shay scored 19 and added nine rebounds.

Annville-Cleona (8-11) has three games remaining as they battle for a spot in Districts. They begin their final stretch with a home game on Monday against Tulpehocken.

Thursday, February 1

Cedar Crest 64, Manheim Township 48

The Falcons entered Thursday night with a 7-1 league record, knowing a win over Manheim Township would result in being crowned Section 1 champions. Crest got out to a quick start and led by 10 points at the end of the 1st quarter. Owen Chernich’s 10 points spearheaded the early effort. The Falcons also showed early that their big men, RJ Young and Aiden Schomp, accounted for 11 points and showed they would cause issues for the Streaks. In the 2nd quarter, the game was played much more evenly, but a pair of three-pointers by Leo Tirado gave the Falcons a 37-26 lead at the half. The game remained evenly played throughout the 3rd quarter as Tirado, Young, and Schomp continued their scoring efforts. With an 11-point lead going into the 4th quarter, Crest was able to tighten up defensively to put the game out of reach.

With the win, Cedar Crest clinched the Lancaster Lebanon League Section 1 Championship.

Young finished the game with 19 points. Joining him in double-figures were Tirado with 14 and Chernich with 10.

Cedar Crest (14-5) has two regular season games remaining. The first of those games will be played on Saturday at Conrad Weiser.

Penn Manor 70, Lebanon 33

On January 9th, Lebanon was tied with Penn Manor through three quarters until the Comets were able to break away. In their second meeting of the year, Penn Manor was not going to play with fire again. Manor’s Ethan Benne scored 14 of his 20 points in the 1st quarter, as his team built an 18-point lead by the end of the 1st quarter. At halftime, the scoreboard read 48-22, as the Cedars were unable to keep pace. The scoring slowed in the 2nd half, but Lebanon could not cut the Penn Manor lead.

Manny Suarez scored 10 points and was the lone Cedar to make it into double-figures.

Lebanon (0-17) has five games remaining. There are a couple of chances for highly competitive contests, with the first being played on Saturday at Milton Hershey.
